Claim: A Facebook user claims that the FBI has uncovered N6 billion and election results from the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s London

Verdict: False. The alleged items the FBI uncovered were not found in Mr Wike’s house. Rather, they are classified documents recovered from former president Donald Trump’s house in Florida.

Amidst an economic downturn stemming from poor leadership and gross corruption, a Facebook user, Igbo Times Magazine, claimed that the United States (US) Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) uncovered $6 billion and 2027 election results in the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike’s London house.
“Breaking News: FBI uncovers $6 billion at ex-governor Wike’s London house, with already written 2027 election result.” Part of the post read.
The Facebook user included photos of a roomful of stacked cartons, Mr Wike, and the post.
As of Thursday, Sept. 27, 2024, the post has earned 29 likes and 27 comments and has been shared 33 times.
Most Facebook users cast apparent doubts about the claim.
“…Let CNN give us the news, then we would believe it.” David Ekueme wrote.
“Wike doesn’t have any house outside Port Harcourt.” John Akagbusi opined.
“So they already know who and who would (contest) the next elections?” Triple Emm queried.
Given the contentious sentiments surrounding the claim and its sensitivity, DUBAWA decided to verify it.
Verification
DUBAWA subjected the photos used to represent the uncovered monies by the FBI and discovered that the image is associated with former US president Donald Trump, when classified files boxes were found hidden in his private home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
To provide more context for the boxes of documents, we conducted a keyword search related to the files and the former US president.
In Aug. 2022, Aljazeera reported that the FBI recovered “top secret” documents from Mr Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The news outlet further reported that a property receipt opened by the court on Friday reveals the FBI agents took 11 sets of classified records from the estate during the search.
The search arose from suspected violations of the US Espionage Act related to the illegal withholding of security documents.
Cable News Network (CNN) and Politico reported similar details of the FBI’s search on the former president’s private home.
DUBAWA also examined the alleged election results posted by the claimant and noticed that it is not, and does not bear semblance to the election results usually presented by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Rather, the alleged “election results” are labelled “Secret/SCI.”
We checked the meaning of Secret/SCI and discovered it refers to Secret/Sensitive Comparted Information, which allows employees to access classified national security information. It has nothing to do with election results.
DUBAWA critically searched for news reports, both international and local, for details about the alleged money discovery in the FCT Minister’s purported London home but found none.
Conclusion
The claim is false. The images used to portray the alleged $6 billion and election results discovery have no material backing, and neither is linked to the FCT Minister.
