As political activities ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election gather momentum, social media has become a fertile ground for misinformation and exaggerated political claims.
Recently, an X user, @abdullahayofel, shared a lengthy post claiming that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had formally endorsed Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s current president, for re-election in 2027.
The post further alleged that the opposition party urged its members nationwide to support the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), and the Tinubu-led administration.
The post also cited national unity, economic reforms, and the performance of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as reasons behind the opposition party’s decision.
As of Jul. 23, 2026, the post has gained 192,000 views, 801 likes, 225 comments, 54 bookmarks and 265 reposts.
Several users appeared to believe the claim. One user, @SamuelAdebimpe, commented, “Not breaking news. Nigerians knew this from 2023. The commissioned Minister just completed his assignment. Congratulations. If Nigerians are satisfied with the current govt, they will re-elect the President. If not, if we are wise, we will not re-elect him. 2027 a decider.”
Another user, @Osas131, also accepted the claim, writing, “At this juncture, he should complete his 8yrs. It’s 2 prove to you all that it’s an empty government, nothing more. When you finally see his tenure run out, you all can then burn yourselves. Just be ready to go to jail because many of you would be found wanting.”
Similarly, @Ugbede356030 commented, “Omo this man is fooling ppl that he is not intelligent cuz how the hell did he get his enemies to follow him.”
However, some users questioned the claim’s authenticity. For instance, @talkinfotech wrote, “Who is PDP? This is a funny way of reporting. A party must speak through someone. No name or rep mentioned. It’s very clear that you, the reporter, also have no clue what you are reporting about.”
Another user, @itswellwithimo, also challenged the claim, stating, “It’s empty brains like you that will see this as a shock. Who heads the PDP faction that made the endorsement? Remember the internet never lies and one day all the evil posts you made will stare at your face, and you will regret it.”

The conflicting reactions, high engagement and virality of the claim prompted DUBAWA to verify it.
Verification
DUBAWA conducted keyword searches using phrases from the viral statement, including “PDP endorses Tinubu for 2027” and “PDP supports Tinubu’s second term.” The earliest reports matching the claim were traced to March 2026.
To determine whether the endorsement reflected the official position of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), DUBAWA examined media reports, statements from party stakeholders, and publicly available information.
Our findings show that the statement originated from the Wike-backed faction of the PDP rather than the party’s recognised national leadership.
According to a report by Vanguard in March 2026, the declaration was made during a meeting of leaders aligned with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The group, during the meeting, announced its support for President Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
The meeting attended by Wike’s political allies was not described as a meeting of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC), National Working Committee (NWC), or any constitutionally recognised decision-making organ of the party.
The report also noted that the declaration further exposed the widening divisions within the opposition party.
Similarly, The Guardian in the same month reported that Wike reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s re-election, maintaining that his political position was separate from that of the PDP as a national party.
The report highlighted that the endorsement came from Wike’s political camp amid the party’s lingering internal crisis and leadership disagreements, not from the PDP’s official leadership.
The endorsement also reflects the ongoing rivalry between major blocs within the PDP.
One bloc is the Wike-backed faction, comprising party members and stakeholders aligned with the FCT minister, who have increasingly expressed support for President Tinubu despite remaining within the PDP.
Another bloc is associated with former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki, whose camp has continued to identify with the PDP’s opposition role and has not endorsed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Under the PDP Constitution, major policy decisions such as endorsing a presidential candidate are expected to come from the party’s recognised organs, including the National Executive Committee (NEC) or through its national convention, not from a faction of party members.
Therefore, presenting the Wike-backed group’s declaration as the position of the entire PDP misrepresents the reality of the party’s internal divisions.
Conclusion
The claim that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027 is misleading. The endorsement originated from the Concerned PDP League, a faction within the PDP. There is no evidence that the PDP, as a political party, has officially adopted this position.
