On Jan. 6, 2026, the Facebook page Red Empire shared a post (archived here) claiming that Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah spent $25 million to buy a private hospital in Egypt.
The post claimed that this hospital had been transformed into a free medical centre for the elderly.
The claim reads in part, “Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah quietly spent $25 million to buy a private hospital in Egypt. He transformed it into a completely free medical centre for elderly people who are alone and have no one to care for them.”
We found similar claims here, here, here, and here.
As of Jan. 8, 2026, the post had garnered over 16,000 reactions, 972 comments, and 631 shares.
A survey of the comment section showed that while most users believed the claim, some other users expressed counter opinions.
One of the users, Swaley Joomun, commented, “A selfless man, a man of conviction who does not abandon his countrymen in dire need of help.”
“Mohamed Salah has made significant charitable contributions to the healthcare system in Egypt… There is no information to suggest he operates an entire, standalone ‘free hospital,’ that is open to the public as a primary institution, but his charity work provides free and low-cost services,” Louise Matheson wrote.
Another user, Mark Dickinson, added, “As a Liverpool supporter, I’d love this to be true, but after fact-checking it seems not. Mo has made plenty of charitable donations, but not on this scale. This story is false.”
Due to the claim’s virality on Facebook, the personality involved, and its potential to cause disinformation, DUBAWA decided to fact-check the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA checked major international and Egyptian news outlets such as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Sport, Ahram’s Egyptian Sports News, Reuters, and The Guardian, for details related to the claim. However, we found none of those news outlets reported on Salah’s purchase of a $25 million private hospital for the elderly in Egypt.
We further examined Salah’s official social media accounts on X, Instagram, and Facebook. There was no mention of a new hospital acquisition or the specific quote attributed to him in the viral post.
Salah’s philanthropic work in Egypt is well-documented, including the donation of an ambulance, among other significant contributions to his country. However, there is no record of him recently buying a $25 million private hospital for the elderly.
Conclusion
The claim that Mohamed Salah purchased a $25 million private hospital for the elderly in Egypt is false. While Salah’s significant charitable work in the country is well-documented, no credible news outlet has reported that he recently purchased a $25 million private hospital.
