Did Trump call for Muslim ban in US?

In October 2025, United States (US) President Donald Trump designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern”.

This announcement was made over alleged systematic violations of religious freedom and the killing of Christians.

Ever since the announcement was made, several misleading and exaggerated claims about his comments on religion have circulated on social media, often presenting things that did not actually happen or were taken out of context.

One of such claims resurfaced on X, where a user J.C.Okechukwu posted that Donald Trump was calling for the shutdown of Muslims entering the US.

The post read, “BREAKING: I Am Calling For A Total And Complete Shutdown of Muslims Entering The United States.” – President Donald J. Trump.

This was made on Nov. 12, 2025 and was accompanied by the picture of Donald Trump.

As of Nov. 13, 2025, the post has generated 232,100 views, 8,100 likes, 2,100 reposts, and 196 bookmarks

The post generated 759 comments, with some users believing it, while others questioned its credibility.

For example, @odogwu1234567,  who believed the post, wrote, “This is the best thing to do, because Christians need to secure the USA. Imagine Christians losing the USA to Muslims. Think about it”.

Other users, like @seasideocean1, expressed doubt about the claim, questioning,

“How true is this? Does he have the right to do so?”

Due to the conflicting comments and the potential to mislead the public, DUBAWA decided to carry out a fact-check

Verification

We conducted a keyword search to find any information about Trump making a statement regarding a ban on Muslims entering the US.

We found that he had indeed made the statement, but on Dec. 7, 2015, when he was a Republican presidential candidate.

The statement appeared on his campaign website and was widely reported by PBS, ABC and The Guardian.

At the time, Trump’s comment came in response to terrorist attacks in Paris and California.

He called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

When he became president in 2017, Trump implemented travel restrictions on citizens from several Muslim-majority countries.

However, it was not a total ban on Muslims and was later revised following court challenges.

DUBAWA also checked the official accounts of Donald Trump and the White House and found no recent posts of this statement, nor any evidence that it was recently reaffirmed.

Conclusion

The claim that Trump is currently calling for a ban on Muslims is misleading. It misrepresents an old statement made while he was a candidate.
