Claim: A website purporting to be owned by the Africell Network is said to offer free data to old customers.
Verdict: False. The website is a clickbait tool that requests a number but offers no free data.
Full Text
Recently, several WhatsApp users have received multiple messages promising to receive free data if they are old customers of Africell Network. In the text, they are instructed to visit a website for their eligibility status and reward.
When people visit the website, which appears to be the online homepage of Africell Network, they are asked to insert their number. The next instruction is to share the promo message with five WhatsApp groups or fifteen people on the messaging app to access the free data.
Given the virality of the message, DUBAWA decided to investigate the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA first contacted the MarComs manager at Africell SL, John Conteh, to confirm if the free data promise was from the company.
Mr Conteh told the researcher that Africell currently does not give old customers free data. He additionally directed the researcher to the telecom giants’ official website, https://www.africell.sl/.
He insisted that the website promising to share data with Africell’s customers is not authentic.
DUBAWA researcher also followed through with the supposed website’s request on how to earn free data, but after several hours, none was provided.
Conclusion
The message that promises free data to old Africell users is false. Additionally, the website attached to the message is clickbait.
