A Facebook user, Eddy Willie Mowon, posted in a public group, Fries FM, claiming that a Liberian lady from Nimba County suffocated to death after her church pastor placed a heavy musical speaker on her stomach.
According to the claimant, Madam Mowon, the alleged action by the pastor was intended to ensure that the lady gets pregnant.
The post had over 120 emojis and more than 80 comments.
Due to the potential to mislead, DUBAWA decided to investigate the claim.
Verification
The researcher first contacted the claimant, Madam Eddy Willie Mowon, regarding the source of her claim and some evidence to support it, but she did not respond.
The researcher also contacted journalists and individuals in Nimba to determine whether the incident had occurred in the county, but no one could confirm it.
Journalist Franklin Doloquee, based in Nimba County, told DUBAWA via telephone conversation with the researcher, “Those are all rumours, and if you mind that you will be running with false news. I have no idea about what you are talking about, and nothing of the sort even happened here in Nimba.”
Then the researcher used reverse image search, and it was discovered that the images were first posted on April 13 by an Instagram user, monsurat_omo.saje claiming that the incident occurred in Nigeria.
Conclusion
Based on all of the facts available, coupled with accounts from residents in Nimba County, the claim made by Madam Eddy Willie Mowon, that “A Liberian lady from Nimba County suffocated to death after her pastor placed a heavy church speaker on her stomach,” is false.
