Alexander Cummings, the opposition Alternative National Congress Political leader, alleged that the Liberian economy is not growing.
Alexander Cummings made the claim when he appeared as a guest on the Spoon Night Time Show, “Spoon Talk.”
The claim made by Cummings was highlighted by several online platforms, including Africa News, Ayy Liberia, Freedom FM 87.9 TV, and Verity Online TV.
Given the controversy that Cummings’ statement has generated, DUBAWA decided to conduct a verification of the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA reviewed the latest report from the Global Economy showing steady growth of the Liberian economy in 2024 by 4.79%, an increase from 4.68% in 2023.
The World Bank in 2023 reported that the Liberian economy expanded by 4.7%, a slight difference from the 4.68% reported by Global Economy.
Other sources, like the African Development Bank and the Central Bank of Liberia, also reported growth within the Liberian economy of 4.8%, an increase from 4.68% or 4.7% in 2023.
Conclusion
Despite slight differences in figures, reports from the World Bank, African Development Banks, Global Economy, and the Central Bank of Liberia show a growth of the Liberian economy in 2024; as such, the claim made by Alexander Cumming is false.
