The news feeds of Facebook users in Liberia were flooded with information that Liberia’s former traditional chief, Zanzan Karwor, was dead.
Chief Karwor was the former head of the National Traditional Council of Chiefs and Elders of Liberia. The news went viral during the first working week of this month after multiple social media users took to Facebook, claiming that the chief died out of frustration.
Some are quoted as saying, “Sad news: Zanzan Karwor is dead.”
DUBAWA verified the viral news due to its potential to mislead and cause fear and panic.
Verification
DUBAWA spoke with the family of Zanzan Karwor to ascertain the information. In response, the third son of the chief, Philip Karwor, said, “My father is not dead.”
He stated that his father had been sick for over a month and had been at the hospital receiving treatment and was later discharged.
He said, “It makes me feel bad hearing that my father is dead while he is still living.” Philip added. “I’m asking everyone carrying this false information to take their posts down.”
