Claim: A Facebook post claims that veteran American actor Morgan Freeman has died.
Verdict: False. News reports and recent articles contradict the claim. Morgan Freeman recently participated in ESPN’s College GameDay in Oxford, Mississippi.

A Facebook user, Votu Vhovhen, claimed that popular veteran and award-winning American actor Morgan Freeman has died.
In the post made on Sept. 20, 2026, Votu wrote, “RIP. Mr Freeman. One of my favourite actors.”
As of Sept. 22, 2026, the post has gathered over 2,400 likes, 627 comments, and 413 reshares.
DUBAWA observed that some users believed the post. One user commented, saying, “This is Heartbreaking. I love anything Morgan Freeman acted in. Amazing man. A life well lived.”
Another wrote, “So sorry to hear that.”
However, others argued that the veteran actor is still alive and that the post was a hoax.
Similar posts were made here and here.
Because of the potential to mislead, DUBAWA investigated the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA first searched for credible reports of Morgan Freeman’s alleged death. No credible report confirming his death was found. More importantly, recent records show Freeman’s public appearances, and there was nothing about his death.
On Sept. 19, 2026, ESPN’s College GameDay was streamed live from Oxford, Mississippi, and Morgan Freeman was physically present as the show’s celebrity guest picker. ESPN’s own press release identifies Freeman as the guest picker for that day’s broadcast.
Also, Reuters Connect published photographs from the event. The Reuters record specifically dates the photograph Sept. 19, 2026, and identifies Freeman as the guest picker. Other media platforms also reported the event as seen here, here, and here.
Furthermore, Morgan Freeman posted on his official Instagram account about his participation in the event.
This is significant because the Facebook post claims Freeman had already died, while authoritative entertainment and broadcasting sources and the actor himself were still documenting his professional activities immediately before and around the claimed date.
DUBAWA found another Facebook post from Sept. 17, 2026 that shared the same image in another context. The user shared two images to celebrate the actor’s birthday. In the first graphic, the text read, “Today, we lost 88-year-old Morgan Freeman”, and the second reads, “Because he just turned 89.”
Conclusion
The claim that Morgan Freeman died at 88 is false. News reports confirm the actor’s public appearances. The image was taken from another post that sarcastically celebrated Morgan’s birthday.
