Ghanaian professional footballer Abdul Ibrahim Ayew, also known as Rahim Ayew, played for Ghana in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The former Black Star defender was just 22 years old when he represented Ghana in the World Cup, playing a key role in the country’s historic performance in the Quarterfinals.
In 2023, Ghana Web reported that Rahim Ayew, after his contract expired, made a free transfer move to Lincoln Red Imps from Magpies FC.
At the time, he was 35 years old, having made 22 appearances for Magpies FC before moving to Lincoln FC.
However, a popular Sierra Leonean blog, Weblog232, posted a photo of the Ghanaian star, claiming that he is 22 years old.
Hours after the claim was posted, it had already gained 1.8k likes, 197 comments, and six shares.
The claim has gone viral among social media users, appearing on platforms such as here, here, here, and here.
The claim has also induced mixed reactions and speculations about his actual age. While some believe that he is above 22 years old, none of them can give the exact date.
DUBAWA decided to fact-check the claim due to its potential to mislead.
Verification
DUBAWA conducted a Google keyword search and found that Rahim Ayew is the son of former footballer Abedi Pele, a three-time African Footballer of the Year, as obtained from the CAF online.
According to our investigation, he is the first son of Abedi Pele, and the eldest to Andrè Ayew and Jordan Ayew. The three of them are professional footballers.
According to Modern Ghana, Rahim Ayew is now a former Black Star defender and a defensive midfielder.
Our investigation on several platforms, such as Transfer Market, Play Maker, ESPN, and Ghana Web, showed that he was born on April 16, 1988, in Tamale, Ghana.
He is currently 37 years old and playing for Lincoln Red Imps Club.
