Claim: A popular politician, AKK, posted on Facebook, alleging that there is only one hospital in the Southern Region.
Verdict: False! DUBAWA’s investigation showed that there are other hospitals in the Southern Region.
Full Text
The Southern Region of Sierra Leone, home to districts such as Bo, Moyamba, Bonthe, and Pujehun, is at the centre of both promise and struggle as communities navigate economic growth, infrastructure development, and social challenges.
Healthcare is another area of progress. Maternal health initiatives supported by international partners have reduced mortality rates, and hospitals in the region are increasingly serving patients from neighbouring Liberia.
However, a popular politician, AKK, alleged that there’s only one hospital in the Southern region.
“We only have one hospital in the entire Southern region, yet President Bio is building party offices in every district,” the claim reads.
The claim has generated a lot of social media engagement with 426 comments and 6 shares.
DUBAWA decided to fact-check it due to its potential to mislead the public.
Verification
DUBAWA reviewed the list of hospitals in the Southern region. Our investigation invalidated Hon. AKK’s claim. We found that there are more than two hospitals in the Southern region.
There are the Bo Government Hospital and Moyamba District Hospital, both in the Southern region, which serve as the primary public health facilities.
Aside from these two hospitals, there are other recognised hospitals in the Southern region, such as the Bonthe Government Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Pujehun Government Hospital and the Serabu Hospital.
Conclusion
Our investigation showed that there is more than one hospital in the Southern region. The claim, therefore, is false.
