FALSE! Viral video claiming Aregbesola was stoned in Ogun, from EndSARS protest

Verdict: False! This is an old video from 2020, during the End SARS movement, involving the former Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola.

Full Text

Rauf Aregbesola is a Nigerian politician who served as Nigeria’s Minister of the Interior from 2019 to 2023. He previously served as governor of Osun State from 2010 to 2018. He is currently the interim national secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after his defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the party in 2025.

Following this defection, many tagged it as a betrayal of the current president and his former political party. Hon Kunle @captainsterling on X posted a video of angry protesters stoning and chasing a convoy out of a campaign ground.

From the caption on the video, Kunle claims the person being stoned was the national secretary.

“This politics is now scary ooo. He was disgraced and molested. He was not even allowed to do any campaign in Sagamu; he and his campaign team were chased out of  Sagamu. An ingrate, the evil he did to Tinubu will be pursuing him and will not be politically recognised any longer.”

Another caption on the post, “Aregbesola got stoned at Ogun State,” has now gone viral and received 185,800 views, 674 likes, 332 comments, and 282 reposts since it was posted on Aug. 17, 2025. It was also found on Facebook here, here, here, and here

DUBAWA decided to verify the post because of the claim’s virality, the personalities involved, and the potential to cause fear and controversy.

Verification

DUBAWA ran a keyword search on the article and saw no credible news organisation reported it. We also discovered that we could not get any leads in all searches.

We then used InVid to analyse fragments of the video and saw that it was an old video involving the former governor of Osun state, Gboyega Oyetola.

According to Channels Television, the incident happened in 2020, during the End SARS movement, and not Aregbesola, as the claimant said.

We then used the headline found on Channels for a keyword search and saw that it was also reported on Oct. 17, 2020. Media organisations like The Cable, The Nation Newspaper, and EONS Intelligence all reported the story of the attack in 2020.

Armed thugs on October 17 attacked the convoy of the then Governor, Oyetola, while he was addressing the #EndSARS protesters in Osogbo, the State Capital. The thugs were said to have destroyed some of the vehicles attached to the Governor’s convoy as his security aides ferried him to safety after a stampede.

While Aregbesola was at Ogun State as the ADC National Secretary, he was not stoned during the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by-election campaign in Remo.

Conclusion

The video depicting Aregbesola being stoned in Ogun State is false. It was an old video from 2020 when protesters attacked the former Governor Oyetola’s convoy.
