A Facebook page purported to be for Representative Yekeh Kolubah of District#10 Montserrado County in Liberia posted images of a newborn baby wrapped up in a lady’s arm on July 6, 2024. The poster alleged that the child was 83 years old and birthed by a 22-year-old woman in Nimba County.
“Nimba County, 22-year-old Yaa Gongweh gave birth to an 83-year-old baby,” the poster said.
The claim created suspicious reactions amongst the public. Some comments under the post said a newborn baby couldn’t be that age. Others considered the situation as an act of bullying, while some attributed the condition of the baby to malnutrition.
When writing this report, the post generated 400 reactions, 275 comments, and 74 shares. The controversial comments led DUBAWA to conduct a fact-check.
Verification
DUBAWA conducted an Al probability check using Illuminate Al. The results on the baby’s uploaded images show an Al generation of 72.2% and 56.8%.
Further research on the image using Google Reverse Image Search revealed that it was first uploaded on August 28, 2021, by Fyambe Media. The image states that a South African woman gave birth to a strange baby. According to the publication, the baby named Lusana was two months old when she encountered the illness known as Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS).
The image was also reported on Nairaland and Dailystar.
Conclusion
Our findings prove that the image is fabricated. It is an algorithm-generated image.
