Claim: X user Naija Nation claims that Nigerians held a parade for Donald Trump in Lagos for the United States Presidential Elections.
Verdict: Misleading! The video is from 2020. Reputable news organisations reported on the story four years ago.
Full Text
On Nov. 5, 2024, Americans voted in the highly anticipated presidential election, which produced former Republican President Donald Trump.
In the days before the election, a video posted by Naija Nation on X surfaced, showing groups of supporters marching and holding placards to rally votes in favour of Trump.
The nearly two-minute video captioned, “Nigerians held a parade for Donald Trump in Lagos,” has gained significant attention since its posting on Nov. 6, 2024.
The claim attracted 659 comments, 2,900 retweets, and 2.8 million views. The video was also found on TikTok and Instagram.
DUBAWA decided to fact-check the video because of its virality, the personalities involved, and the debates surrounding the election.
Verification
Using the InVid verification tool, analysis of the video fragments reveals that the video first surfaced in 2020. DUBAWA traced the exact footage to a 2020 Facebook post on Mr Trump’s page with the caption, “A parade for me in Nigeria, a great honour!”
A keyword search on the post further led to a post from Nov. 3, 2020, on Tribune Online with the headline, “Trump celebrates procession in Nigeria for his re-election.”
We also saw the news story on Punch about the procession for the president in 2020.
“The video shows a procession of men and women singing different victory songs amid intense drumming, all supporting the Republican candidate in today’s US election. The video also shows the supporters waving American flags and placards with different inscriptions, including ‘Trump 2020,” the Punch post read.
Conclusion
These findings clearly show that the video is not new but is actually from an older pro-Trump event in Nigeria. The footage dates back to 2020, during the U.S. presidential election when supporters in Nigeria organised a parade to show their backing for Mr Trump.
