Misleading! Video of mass defection to APC in Kano, not recent

Full Text

As the 2027 general election draws closer, social media users have resorted to sharing politically related disinformation targeting political parties and candidates.

Recently, an X user, @harri_onuoha,  shared a 30-second video and claimed that thousands of  Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) members defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

In the clip (archived here), which appears to be from a political campaign rally, people were seen throwing the Kwankwanso insignia cap onto the stage.

As of Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026, the post had generated over 33,400 views, 44 likes, 138 comments, 21 reposts, and five bookmarks.

In the comments, we noticed that while some users believed the claim, others doubted its authenticity.

One user, @NaijaOclock, wrote, “APC go buy caps Taya for Kano and still lose woefully walahi talahi.”

Another user, @Storji, said, “I’m just watching this again and laughing and sad at the same time. Politics has divided Nigerians too much.”

@Big-pee042 asserted, “Stop spreading fake news; this was 2023.”

To ensure that the media space is devoid of disinformation ahead of the 2027 election, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.

Verification

DUBAWA first observed that the people on stage in the video wore yellow caps with 2023 printed on them. This suggests the video may not be recent.

So we ran a Google Reverse Image Search on the video and found a similar TikTok post from February 2023. The post caption reads, “The King’s message to Sumaila.”

We ran a Google Reverse Image Search on the TikTok clip, which linked us to another TikTok clip with the hashtags #GawunaGaro2023 and #COGAGA2023.

We looked up the hashtags on Google and found that both hashtags were political campaign slogans used during the 2023 Kano State governorship bid of APC aspirant Nasiru Yusuf.

We also noticed a video from the event uploaded on Facebook in 2023.

DUBAWA also checked for recent credible news articles related to the claim but found none.

Conclusion

DUBAWA’s research shows that the video has been online since 2023; therefore, the post is misleading.
