NO! Guava trees can not be used to grow eggs

Verdict: FALSE. The picture of eggs growing on the tree is edited. Research also shows that there are no scientific explanations that eggs can be planted.

Full Text

Eggs are content of the hard-shelled reproductive body produced by birds. While the primary role of the egg is to reproduce the species, most eggs laid by domestic fowl, except those specifically set aside for hatching, are not fertilised but sold mainly for human consumption.

Frequent price increases have made eggs supposedly the cheapest source of protein in Nigeria. The prices have continued to rise beyond the reach of average households.

Following this development, Rana Craft on Facebook posted a video on how eggs can be planted using Guava tree, aloe vera, and garden soil.

In the four-minute video, a man is seen cutting a branch of guava leaves and then rubbing it with aloe vera. He then breaks raw eggs into a plate, mixing them with rooting hormones and soft drinks to help the egg grow well. He says to wait for a month to get the desired results.

The video, which has now gone viral, garnered 6,200 likes, 1,000 comments, and 42,500 views as of August 17, 2023.

The virality of the post and the economic implication made DUBAWA investigate this post.

This video and the methods showcased in the trending video can be compelling, but we quickly pointed out that there was no such thing as trees that grow the yolk-filled substance.

How eggs are made

The scientific and natural way of getting eggs is when they are formed in the reproductive tract of a female chicken, called a hen.

The reproductive tract is divided into two major parts: the ovary and the oviduct. The ovary is where the yolk is added. When the yolk reaches the right size, ovulation releases it from the ovary. The embryo develops inside the egg for 21 days, the incubation period.

Chicken eggs purchased from a store can’t sprout, as they are typically unfertilised. We also found that leaving eggs in the soil acts as good fertiliser, as it slowly decompose and becomes natural fertiliser under the soil.

Conclusion

No scientific explanation exists for how eggs can grow by planting in the ground. The image from the video is edited to captivate people.
