Gistreel, a news website, has acknowledged its error and corrected the report about the closure of the United States (US) Embassy.
On July 4, 2025, Gistreel posted that the US Embassy had announced the closure of its offices in Abuja and Lagos.
This post generated conflicting opinions, prompting DUBAWA to fact-check it. We found that the post was clickbait. Although the Facebook headline announced the embassy closure, the linked content clarified it was due to public holidays, as reported by credible news organisations.
Following our fact-check, Meta flagged the post as containing false information.
A few days after Meta’s flag, Gistreel contacted us to inform us that they had edited the post on their page.
“We hereby confirm that our authors erred in titling the post. Hence, the clickbait appearance. It wasn’t intended. We have edited the post content to reflect the factual news update, and we have added more measures to prevent future occurrences,” they noted.
We checked independently and confirmed that the post has been edited to reflect the changes made.
