Claim: A Facebook user shared a video of a police officer receiving public accolades and claimed he was a Nigerian policeman who had repelled a robbery attack.
Verdict: Misleading! The incident in the video occurred in Aboso, a town in Ghana, after a police officer was praised for single-handedly saving lives during a fire outbreak.

A Facebook user, Hausawa, recently shared a video (archived here) of a jubilant crowd carrying a police officer who had reportedly single-handedly repelled a robbery attack, and claimed the heroic officer is Nigerian.
“The Story of a gallant Nigerian police officer, Mr Anthony, a very brave police officer. Around 3 pm, a whole street was robbed by 7 armed men, and he was the only one on duty. They started exchanging bullets. To cut it short, he got 6 of those heavily armed men down…”
As of Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, the video has generated over 2,900 likes, 369 comments, and 451 reposts.
In the comment section, some X users commended the officer’s efforts, while others doubted the post’s authenticity.
“Can we get his account number made public? These are the people that deserve to be shown love. They sacrifice all so that the country will be better for us all,” Mathias Dilyep wrote.
Another comment by Usman Haruna reads, “Please, Nigeria, let this man place his account with his phone number for us to bless him, with the smallest we can.”
Meanwhile, Jul Ez commented, “This is not the Nigerian police uniform.”
To clarify the details of the incident and curtail the spread of misinformation and disinformation, DUBAWA decided to verify the video.
Verification
Firstly, DUBAWA conducted a manual analysis of the video and noted that the uniform colour and pattern closely resemble the Nigerian police uniform. But we found that the Ghana Police Service has the same uniform colour.
To further verify, we subjected the clip to a Google Reverse Image Search and found similar videos uploaded on Instagram in August 2026, as seen here, here, and here.
The posts described the incident as a fire outbreak at Aboso, a town near Tarkwa in Ghana’s Western Region. A police officer, identified as Inspector Hance Atubra, had single-handedly put out the inferno after firefighters failed to be at the scene.
We conducted a keyword search, and it linked us to a Modern Ghana report published on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026.
According to the report, Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Yohuno, promoted Hance Atubra of the Tarkwa Divisional Police Headquarters to the rank of Chief Inspector after he bravely made efforts to save people when a fire broke out at Aboso in the Western Region.
The report further stated that Mr Atubra was reportedly the first police officer to arrive at the scene and immediately moved to assist people trapped within the affected areas.
Other Ghanaian news outlets, Citi Newsroom and AsaaseRadio, also reported similar developments in August.
Conclusion
The video was recorded in Ghana, where a police officer rescued residents during a fire outbreak in Aboso, not Nigeria. Therefore, the claim is misleading.
