A widely circulated post on Threads shows Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez allegedly wearing Argentina jerseys in the stands, accompanied by the caption: “He stayed to cheer for his wife’s country.”
The claim implies that Ronaldo, following Portugal’s exit from the 2026 World Cup, chose to stay and support Argentina because of his relationship with Georgina Rodríguez. Similar posts were also made here, on Instagram, and on Facebook (See here and here).

Given the post’s popularity and the attention it received online, DUBAWA verified the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA subjected the viral image to digital forensic checks, including an examination of its EXIF metadata.
The analysis found that the image lacks the metadata normally associated with an original photograph. It contains no information about the camera used, the date the image was taken, the GPS location, or device details. Instead, it only retains basic image properties such as:
- 1. Resolution: 750 × 665 pixels
- 2. Colour Space: sRGB
- 3. DPI: 72
The absence of original metadata strongly suggests the image has been edited, re-saved, or manipulated before being shared online.

Further forensic checks using JPEGsnoop confirmed there was no EXIF data, but the Photoshop metadata indicates the image was edited or saved with Adobe Photoshop. This is contained in the digits labelled special instructions, which contain internal Adobe identifiers.

Furthermore, no reputable sports broadcaster or news organisation, including FIFA, Reuters, BBC Sport, ESPN, Sky Sports, or Goal, reported that Cristiano Ronaldo remained in the stadium to support Argentina after Portugal’s match. An event of this nature, involving a high-profile athlete at a major tournament, would almost certainly have been captured and reported by credible sports media.
DUBAWA also found that the caption falsely describes Georgina Rodríguez as Ronaldo’s wife. Although Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodríguez have been in a long-term relationship and have children together, they are not legally married.
Conclusion
The image circulating online has clear signs of digital manipulation and lacks the metadata expected from an original photograph. The claim also incorrectly identifies Georgina Rodríguez as Ronaldo’s wife, and there is no credible evidence that Cristiano Ronaldo stayed behind to support Argentina after Portugal’s exit from the competition.
