Claim: A photo published on the Sierra Gist TV Facebook page claims to depict “Kambia City, Sierra Leone, West Africa.”

Verdict: False. The photo does not show Kambia. It lacks identifiable Kambian features such as the district hospital, border post, local mosque, or market layout. Using a reverse image tool, DUBAWA can confirm that the picture is actually from Owerri, Nigeria.

A Facebook post from the Sierra Gist TV page shared a photo with the caption: “Kambia city, Sierra Leone, West Africa.”
This generated engagement from dozens of users and raised questions about whether Kambia had undergone recent significant infrastructure developments. A visual review shows that the location in the post appears unusually urban for Kambia’s rural and low-density layout.
To verify the accuracy of this claim, DUBAWA conducted an investigation using visual analysis, satellite imagery, and reverse image lookup tools.
Verification
Reverse Image Search
Using Google Lens and TinEye, DUBAWA conducted a reverse image search of the viral photo. Multiple matches were found linking the visual environment to Owerri, Nigeria.
Notably, photos of Kambia Town on various sites, such as The Kambia Appeal, Cocorioko, and Journey Gourmet, clearly show a rural settlement with no high-rise buildings or multilane highways.
The scene in the post is inconsistent with those visuals. When searched, the keyword attached to the image visualises Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, and no direct link with Kambia, Sierra Leone. The photo below is a visual of what Kambia City road looks like, unlike the advanced and well-structured multiple lanes shown in the claimant’s post.
Satellite Comparison & Physical Landmarks
Kambia Town is a known border and trading post in northern Sierra Leone. It is connected to Guinea via a major highway and hosts facilities such as the Kambia Government Hospital, local markets, mosques, and the border customs post. However, the photo in the Facebook post does not contain any of these known landmarks. Instead, it features:
• Multi-lane boulevards
• A landscaped median
• Large buildings in the background
• Road infrastructure is more characteristic of urban cities.
A Google Earth inspection and geographical landscape of Kambia reveals that its main roads are two-lane highways with market stalls, motorcycles, taxis, and rural housing lining the streets, not wide urban boulevards as shown in the viral photo.
Media Development Reports
A Development briefing by the Sierra Leone Development Encyclopedia confirms that infrastructures in Kambia include boreholes, schools, and minor road maintenance, but not significant expressway development or large-scale city reconstruction.
No credible report from the Ministry of Works and Public Assets (MOWPA) has cited Kambia as the recipient of a highway upgrade resembling what is shown in the Facebook post. It was only in April that a project concerning the Reconstruction of Kambia was out seeking consultancy services.
Conclusion
There is no evidence to support the claim that the photo in the viral Facebook post shows Kambia City in Sierra Leone. Visual landmarks, Google Earth comparisons, and media reports show that Kambia is a rural border town with modest infrastructure. The keyword attached to the post indicates Owerri in Imo State, Nigeria.
