Verdict: False! According to credible media outlets and her interviews, Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, is from Nigeria.

Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, won the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 2, 2025, cementing her status as a two-time Grammy winner. The singer-songwriter makes waves internationally, earning recognition for her unique sound and artistry.

Following her latest achievement, X user Beno SarkCess (@benopaOnyx1) stirred debate by claiming that the “love me jeje” crooner, Tems, is from Ghana. 

“Ghanaian female musician Twumasi Efia Mirekuwaa Sintim, popularly known as TEMS, has won her second Grammy with ‘Love Me Jeje.’ Ghanaians are proud,” the user wrote. 

Kramz10 (@kramz_10z) was surprised and replied, “This TEMS from Ghana??”

Another user, DJ Depy the finest (@Depy_divv), agreed with the post and wrote, 

“Ghana has always sold the African continent to the world. I remember when she was singing in bars in Kumasi some years ago, now she’s global making Ghana and Africa proud. I love TEMS.”

Opposing the claim, Tunde Akerele @Interflex2004 posted, “I like this: wishing good things for yourself. Unfortunately, TEMS is a chronic and undiluted YORUBA LADY. God will give you yours.”

The claim, which has gone viral, has garnered two million views, 2,200 comments, and 29,000 likes since it was posted on Feb. 3, 2025.

Verification

Popular singer Tems, a two-time Grammy Award winner, has popular information about her background. To verify her details, we conducted a Google keyword search.

According to The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, is from Nigeria. She was born on June 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria.

She is recognised as a prominent Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer. She has gained international fame for her unique sound and collaborations with notable artists. Her career took off with hits like “Essence” and “Try Me,” and she has received multiple awards, including a Grammy nomination. 

In an interview with Korty, a popular YouTuber in Nigeria, Tems also mentioned her Nigerian origin and that she lived in Nigeria from age five.

Notable Newspapers like ThisDay Newspaper and Premium Times also confirmed that Temilade, professionally known as Tems, is from Nigeria.

Conclusion 

The claim that Tems is from Ghana is false. Notable media organisations and interviews confirmed this.
