The Nigerian Military has been in the news recently over the kidnapping of school children in Kaduna and how the military is trying its best to ensure their rescue.
In light of this, a Facebook user, Chinawatra Ndi-Igbo, alleged that over 500 Igbo officers resigned from the military. In the comment section, a picture was also posted of how the officers resigned and passed a vote of no-confidence on the president.
The post shared on March 13, 2024, has been reposted on other social media platforms like X and Instagram.
The sensitivity of the news and the possible impact made DUBAWA verify the claim.
Verification
We ran a keyword search on the post and saw that the claim was recurring from 2023, posted by Aso Villa News on Facebook. In the post, they mentioned that the officers resigned and passed a vote of no-confidence for Tinubu as president.
We used TinEye to analyse one of the pictures attached to the post and saw that the picture had no relation with the Nigerian Army. The caption on the original picture taken in 2020 reads, “West African leaders plan meeting as a condemnation of Mali coup grows”.
We also noticed that the uniform worn in the picture did not belong to the Nigerian military but the Mali Army.
We also discovered that the second picture attached to the post surfaced online at different times in 2022, and another time on Daily Post
We did a keyword search on the claim and saw a post by Premium Times in 2021 that talked about 127 soldiers resigning from the Nigerian Army. The post did not mention any tribe or state.
We checked to see if any other reputable news organisations reported the development and found none.
We tried to reach out to the military for a statement, but all efforts proved abortive.
Conclusion
The claim that 500 officers resigned from the Army is false. The pictures attached were old pictures recirculated from 2021, 2022, and 2023, and the uniform worn in the image does not belong to the Nigerian Army.
