Claim: A Facebook user shared a video claiming that Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo resigned to work for Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Verdict: Misleading. While Gwarzo resigned in March 2026 and joined the NDC, he did so after a fallout with the state governor and an impeachment move.

Kano’s politics shifted in early 2026 when Governor Abba Yusuf left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). His deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, however, remained in the NNPP and openly reaffirmed his loyalty to Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Recently, Facebook user Nwachukwu Josep shared a 13-second video (archived here) claiming that the deputy governor resigned “to go and work for” Obi and Kwankwaso.
In the video, a man is seen on screen, looking charged up as he says, “Breaking news. Kano State Deputy Governor has resigned to work for Obi and Kwankwaso. Many more are yet to come.”
As of Oct. 11, 2026, the post had garnered 1 million views, over 18,000 likes, 1,500 shares, and 529 comments at the time of review.
The same claim was also shared here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
The claim offers a specific motive for the resignation but provides no evidence. It also surfaces at a politically charged time, ahead of the 2027 elections.
Recognising the risk, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA searched for media reports on Gwarzo’s resignation. Premium Times, Ripples Nigeria and PRNigeria all reported that Gwarzo resigned on March 27, 2026.
Vanguard reported that, in his resignation letter to Governor Yusuf, Gwarzo said he stepped down voluntarily so the government and the state could move forward without distractions. A Daily Nigerian report on the resignation said it was in the interest of stable governance in Kano. Neither mentions Obi or Kwankwaso. These reports point to a different cause.
Premium Times reported that the Kano State House of Assembly had served Gwarzo an impeachment notice on March 5, 2026, before the announced resignation. The Kwankwasiyya movement, however, said the decision was unconnected to the impeachment process.
PRNigeria added that a Federal High Court in Kano refused Gwarzo’s application to stop the impeachment process days before he quit. Another report from Ripples Nigeria also said the Assembly had pressured him to leave office.
Subsequently, Gwarzo joined the ADC on April 5, 2025, and Kwankwaso publicly congratulated him. On May 5, 2026, two days after Obi and Kwankwaso moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), he also left the ADC for the NDC.
On May 29, 2026, Kwankwaso announced Gwarzo as the party’s Kano governorship candidate for 2027.
Conclusion
DUBAWA found the claim to be misleading. Although Gwarzo resigned and joined the NDC afterwards, his resignation was not recent and came after a rift with his principal, Governor Yusuf, over his APC defection.
