Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, gained widespread popularity, particularly among young Nigerians who rallied behind him under the “Obi-dient” movement.
As conversations around the 2027 general elections begin to kick off in different corners, a Facebook page, ‘dailyexcessive’ on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2025, claimed that Dangote, Nigeria’s richest entrepreneur, had declared support for Obi ahead of the 2027 elections. The post also included a link to a website providing further details.
Given the suspicion around the posts and their relevance to Nigeria’s political landscape, we conducted this fact-check.
Verification
DUBAWA used a keyword search on Google to find if Aliko Dangote expressed support for Peter Obi towards the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria. We found no credible source that reported that Dangote had done anything related to it.
We also visited Obi’s official X and Facebook accounts and Dangote’s X and Facebook accounts but found no evidence of the claim.
DUBAWA’s findings indicate that Peter Obi has not publicly declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027. In a Jan 28, 2025, news report by Ariste News, Obi denied forming a coalition to seize power in the upcoming election.
He stated, “I’m not interested in any coalition for the purpose of taking power. It is about discussing Nigeria. How do we care about securing Nigerians? How do we care about the common person in Nigeria? How do we care about our children being in school? That is the most important thing for now.”
Additionally, no record of Dangote making any public political endorsements for the 2027 election is available.
Conclusion
The ‘dailyexcessive’s claim about Dangote declaring support for Peter Obi is false. We also found that this Facebook page is notorious for making false claims.
