Claim: The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) recently dropped 16 countries from receiving US government economic assistance in 2026.

Verdict: Misleading! MCC did exclude countries from receiving U.S. economic assistance for 2026, but the official list on its website contains 18 countries, not 16 as claimed.
Full Text
The Assistant Director for External Communications at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, Mohammed Melvin Kwenah, has alleged that the Millennium Challenge Corporation recently dropped 16 countries from benefiting from its 2026 compact or economic assistance.
In the post, Mohammed said:
“The MCC of the US Gov’t [government] recently dropped 16 countries, including some of our neighbours. Today, the same MCC will announce big news for Liberia.”
The claimant further clarified that the 16 countries dropped by the MCC will not receive economic assistance in response to our researcher’s comment on the post.

DUBAWA decided to investigate the claim as part of its commitment to combating misinformation and disinformation.
Verification
DUBAWA first engaged the claimant, who provided an official communication from the MCC official website to support his assertion.
A review of the MCC publication confirmed that some countries were indeed deemed ineligible for U.S. economic assistance for 2026. However, the official list contained 18 countries, not 16.
The 18 ineligible countries listed by MCC are Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Burma, Eritrea, Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Mali, Nicaragua, Niger, North Korea, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe.

Conclusion
In conclusion the claim that MCC dropped 16 countries is misleading.
MCC did publish a list of countries ineligible for economic assistance in 2026, but the number is 18, not 16. Therefore, the claim presents an incomplete and misleading picture of the MCC’s decision.
