Godswill Akpabio is the President of the Nigerian Senate and a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, a Facebook page, The Opposition, posted an eighteen-second video (archived link here) claiming that Akpabio had announced his resignation from the party.
In the video, Akpabio was heard saying, “I write to formally tender my resignation letter from the APC effective today. This decision has not been taken lightly…”
The video attracted several reactions from Facebook users, with some believing the claim while others questioned its authenticity. Christian Nnabugo commented, “AI at work. If he tries it, he’s going to jail the next day,” while Henry Paul said, “He can only leave when APC is no longer in power, but as long as APC is still in power, till death do part.”
Luke Ugwu also commented, “He was reading another person’s letter on the floor,” while Oluwafemi Adeyemo wrote, “AI. But truly, if he joins NDC, he will be one of the great politicians by Obidient.”

DUBAWA decided to fact-check the claim because Akpabio holds a significant political position, and the claim emerged during a period of heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Verification
To verify the claim, DUBAWA took a screenshot from the video and conducted a reverse image search. The search led to a longer version of the footage, lasting seven minutes and 44 seconds, posted on the Facebook page Osogbo Updates.
A review of the longer video, which was also shared here, showed that Akpabio was not announcing his own resignation. Rather, he was reading a resignation letter from Olubiyi Fadeyi Ajagunla, the senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District, on the floor of the Senate.
The letter informed the Senate of Fadeyi Ajagunla’s resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in July 2026.
DUBAWA also checked the official social media handles of the All Progressives Congress, the Nigerian Senate and Senator Godswill Akpabio for any announcement regarding Akpabio’s resignation from the party. No such announcement was found as of the time of filing this report.
Conclusion
The claim that Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress is false. DUBAWA’s findings show that the viral video was misleadingly edited from footage of Akpabio reading another senator’s resignation letter on the floor of the Senate. The senator who resigned from the APC and defected to the PDP was Olubiyi Fadeyi Ajagunla, not Godswill Akpabio.
