Claim: “President-Elect Joseph Boakai appoints his daughter Randa Boakai and his son Tamba Boakai to the Transitional Inaugural Team. It is too soon,” says Weah’s Presidential Aide, Sekou Kalasco Damaro.

Verdict: False. The Unity Party (UP) has distanced itself from the claim. UP SG Amos Tweah says the list is unofficial. Also, the list containing the names of the daughter and son of Mr Boakai did not have the UP emblem and authority signature.

The Joint Presidential Team in Liberia is currently working out details for the smooth transition of power from one elected president to another.

President Weah’s power transfer to Mr Joseph Nyuma Boakai will mark the second peaceful democratic transition in the country after fourteen years of conflict.

According to Weah’s Presidential Aide, inside Boakai’s transition team are two children of the President-elect named on the sub-committee of the Transitional Inaugural Team.

He shared that Randa and Tamba Boakai are children of the incoming Liberian leader Joseph Nyuma Boakai. Mr Damaro made the claim on his official Facebook page.

The claim was made when Mr Weah was being criticised for alleged cases of misgovernance in the last six years.

It is against this background and the clamour for change and good governance in Liberia that DUBAWA decided to determine the post’s authenticity.

Verification

We contacted the Unity Party Secretary General Amos Tweah, who disagreed with the claim and said the UP was unaware.

“I am not aware of what you are talking about,” said Tweah. “Every official list from the Unity Party will be authorised and  posted by the leadership of the party.”

On the official Facebook page of the Unity Party, there is a release quoting the President-elect Joseph Nyuma Boakai during the naming of Madam Miatta Fahnbulleh as Chairperson of the 2024 Inaugural Committee. The President-elect also appointed Amb. Sylvester Grisgby as Vice Chair.

Included on the committee are two former Foreign Ministers, Marjon Kamara and Olubanke King Akerele, as advisors. The Unity Party National Chairman is an Ex-officio member.

“The committee has over 50 members who will be placed on various subcommittees. Congratulations to the team!” the release said.

DUBAWA also found the list believed to be from the Unity Party containing the names of Randa and Tamba Boakai. A government critic and a defeated lawmaker, Acarous Moses Gray shared it. He and Mr Damaro did the post on the same day– Dec. 9, 2023.

Mr Damaro, when messaged by DUBAWA to clarify or substantiate the claim with facts, said, “Three are family members Jake, Tamba, and Randa.” Concerning the position of the names on the list, he said: “Tamba, son #40; Randa, daughter #43 and Jake, nephew #41.”

However, he could not provide the same list bearing the names of these individuals with the Unity Party emblem or logo, nor did he show proof that a party official had signed the list in question.  See the conversation screenshot below:

A careful examination of the list, however, showed that there is no official logo of the Unity Party, nor is the list bearing the signature of any authority.
