Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai, during his third State of the Nation Address, claimed that Liberia’s Gross International Reserve increased from $475 million in 2024 to $576 million in 2025.

The State of the Nation Address is in fulfilment of Article 58 of the Liberian Constitution, which requires the President to present an annual message on the State of the Republic, the condition of the economy, and the legislative agenda for the year ahead.

The Liberian leader made the claim on Monday, January 27, 2026, while addressing the current state of the economy and the 2026 economic outlook.

“Liberia’s external sector performed well in 2025. Gross international reserves increased from $475 million in 2024 to $576 million, surpassing the previous year by US$101 million. Also, net international reserves exceeded IMF targets, potentially reaching $280 million by December 2025, and exports grew over 31 per cent to about $2.1 billion,” he said.

DUBAWA decided to fact-check President Boakai’s claim in light of several concerns raised by Liberians, including former government officials, regarding its validity.

Verification

Our researcher visited the Central Bank of Liberia’s official website. The Central Bank of Liberia is the Liberian government’s monetary authority.

According to page 15 of the Central Bank of Liberia’s December 2024 monthly economic review, the Gross International Reserve at the end of December 2024 was $476.3 million.

However, President Boakai’s claim that the current Gross International Reserve is $576 million cannot be verified, as the Central Bank of Liberia has yet to publish economic data for December 2025.

Conclusion

Based on available data from the Central Bank of Liberia, the claim made by President Joseph Boakai is false.
