A social media user, Amara Dumbuya, in Sierra Leone, has widely shared a post claiming that global internet sensation IShowSpeed is in Freetown. The post, shared by a Facebook page, quickly drew attention, with many users expressing excitement and surprise in the comments.
Given IShowSpeed’s popularity and prior visits to African countries, the claim generated public interest and heightened expectations among fans. However, DUBAWA subjected the claim to verification to determine its accuracy.
IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., is a popular American YouTuber, livestreamer, and internet personality. He was born on 21 January 2005 in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. He became widely known for his energetic, emotional, and sometimes controversial livestreams.
He also started creating content around 2016, but he rose to global fame between 2021 and 2022. His content mainly focuses on gaming, especially FIFA, Fortnite, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, as well as music, comedy skits, and live reactions. His dramatic reactions and spontaneous style quickly attracted millions of young viewers worldwide.
Beyond gaming, IShowSpeed has also built a music career. Some of his songs, including “World Cup,” gained massive popularity online, especially during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, during which he openly showed his support for football star Cristiano Ronaldo. This passion for football has become a major part of his online identity.
IshowSpeed is also known for his international travels, often livestreaming his experiences in different countries, which usually attract large crowds and media attention. Because of his fame, his movements are often well documented online.
Today, IShowSpeed is one of the most influential youth content creators in the world, with millions of followers across YouTube and other social media platforms.
Verification
DUBAWA conducted checks using multiple verification methods. First, the researcher reviewed IShowSpeed’s verified social media accounts, including his Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and livestream platforms. At the time the post was published and shared, there was no announcement, post, livestream, or story indicating that IShowSpeed was in Freetown or had plans to visit Sierra Leone.
Second, DUBAWA examined recent videos and livestreams circulating online that documented IShowSpeed’s itinerary. None of the available content placed him in Sierra Leone. Also, there is credible evidence that he had visited Liberia earlier that day and could not have been in Sierra Leone at the same time.
Third, DUBAWA checked reliable news platforms, entertainment blogs, and event listings within Sierra Leone. No media house, entertainment promoter, or government authority reported IShowSpeed’s arrival in Freetown. High-profile international visitors usually attract media coverage, airport sightings, or official confirmations, none of which were available in this case.
Additionally, the graphic used in the viral post raised concerns. The image appears to be a recycled promotional photo of IShowSpeed, combined with a Sierra Leone flag and bold text. There is no date, location tag, airport photo, or real-time evidence to support the claim. Such graphics are commonly used on social media to attract attention and increase engagement.
Conclusion
DUBAWA finds that the claim that IShowSpeed is in Freetown is misleading. There is no credible evidence from his social media accounts, reliable news sources, or reports confirming his presence in Sierra Leone.
