False! Pictures of Ghana’s roads used to represent The Gambia

Verdict: False. Checks by DUBAWA through image reverse verification show that the pictures of the roads constructed were from Ghana, not The Gambia.

After winning his re-election bid in 2021, among the promises made by The Gambian President Adama Barrow was to build more infrastructure, especially roads across the country.

The Gambians are therefore anticipating the completion of these projects, mainly the 50km roads within the Greater Banjul Area funded by and for the Organization of Islamic (OIC) Conference, which The Gambia is due to host in 2024.

A supporter of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), Babucarr Bahoum, who frequently monitors the road construction, posted photos on his Facebook account claiming those roads were built in The Gambia according to President Barrow’s promise.

He said, “Masterclass roads done by Dr Barrow in The Gambia.”

On Feb 12, 2024, the post on Facebook generated about 66 comments, eight reshares, and 75 reactions.

The comment section contained different opinions about the validity of the pictures and questions about where the roads have been constructed in The Gambia.

One Van Lkeita said, “Che [SIC] Gambia people promote lies, open lies just to give credit to their master… misleading the general public is part of their agreement.”

Another Karra Touray said, “Everyone is informed in this 21st century. People already knew where this is.”

“Which road is this?” one Momodou Inkeh Bah asked.

Ebrahimprof Bah said, “Even the blind can tell this is not Gambia.”

Verification

DUBAWA conducted a Google Reverse Image Search on the picture, which shows that the roads are constructed in Ghana and not in The Gambia. The road is in the OBUASI township in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

Ghana’s Deputy Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, posted the pictures on her X (Twitter) page with the caption, “Hospital road Obuasi town Roads in Ashanti Region. Done by Npp #buidingghanatogether #ItIsPossible.”

Similar posts, as can be seen here, here, and here, all point to Ghana as the destination for the roads in question with the caption in one of the posts as follows:

“OBUASI and its environs have received their fair share of road infrastructure, including the asphaltic overlay of the Obuasi town roads, the Obuasi Senior High School, and the rehabilitation of the Anhwiankwanta to Obuasi Road as shown in the pictures below,” the post reads.

Additionally, DUBAWA contacted a Fatu Network reporter, Alieu Jallow, who is currently on a nationwide tour with The Gambia’s Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, Ebrima Sillah, inspecting ongoing project sites.

“I have not seen these kinds of roads in The Gambia. The only road that has been completed so far is the road linking Westfield National Environmental Agency to the University of Apply Science and Technology, formerly Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI). The road that is near completion is the Brufut road. Apart from these, none of the other roads in the Greater Banjul Area are completed.

“Work on some of the roads is expected to be completed in May, but in some areas like Bundung, we are not happy with the progress made,” Ebrima Sillah, the Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, said.

Conclusion

The pictures used to describe the roads in The Gambia are from Ghana. Therefore, the claim is false.
