Babatunde Gbadamosi, an X user, tweeted a claim that the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, lost four southwestern states during the 2023 election that brought him to power.

His tweet partly reads, “Yorubas VOTED against Tinubu. He lost Lagos, Ogun, Osun, and Oyo badly. He BOUGHT Ekiti and Ondo votes.”

Apart from circulating on X, the tweet has also been reposted on Facebook, as seen here and here, with multiple users believing it to be true.

Political misinformation doesn’t only thrive during elections hence the need to verify the assertion.

Verification

The 2023 presidential election was fiercely contested with candidates cutting across Nigeria’s three umbrella tribes. While Mr Tinubu represented the Yoruba, Peter Obi the Igbo, and Atiku Abubakar the Fulani/Hausa.

Public data shows that Mr Tinubu lost Lagos to Mr Obi and Osun to Mr Abubakar out of the six southwestern states. However, he won in Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, and Ondo.

Premium Times, Punch, and Vanguard confirmed these results.

Conclusion

Contrary to the claim, President Tinubu lost only in two southwestern states. The claim is mostly false.
