A Facebook post shared by social media user Anenihac claims that Baltasar Ebang Engonga was seen among spectators during the DR Congo versus England football match in the ongoing World Cup, suggesting he has been released from prison. The post reads, “Breaking news… How many of you remember this man, Baltasar? I thought he was still in prison. How come he’s out watching the match between DR Congo and England?”
The post has attracted significant engagement, with over 2,500 likes and reactions, leading many users to believe Engonga has regained his freedom.
To promote truth in public discourse, DUBAWA decided to investigate the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA subjected the viral image to two AI image detection analyses, deepai.org and truthscan.com, which returned an 86% probability in both analyses that the image is AI-generated or digitally manipulated. This strongly suggests that the image cannot be relied upon as authentic evidence of Engonga’s whereabouts.
AI analysis of the viral image
Beyond the image analysis, DUBAWA searched for official and credible reports regarding any release of Baltasar Ebang Engonga.
The search found that international media, including the BBC, Guardian, and several reputable news organisations, widely reported his August 2025 conviction for embezzlement, for which he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Given the extraordinary international attention surrounding Engonga’s corruption case and earlier viral sex scandal, any lawful release would almost certainly have been covered by major international media. No such reports exist.
