Nigeria has long struggled with inadequate electricity supply, characterised by frequent blackouts, high costs, and unreliable distribution.

Despite having an installed power generation capacity of over 13,000 megawatts (MW), the country only delivers between 3,500 MW and 5,500 MW to consumers due to infrastructural deficiencies, poor transmission networks, and inefficiencies in distribution.

Pulse Trends, a FaceBook page, asserted that Adedeji Adeleke, father of popular singer and songwriter Davido, has completed his two billion dollar power plant. He also noted that the power plant will supply electricity to over three million people and will be cheaper than the the current distribution companies.

In the comment section, Opeyemi Apejua, happy about the development, wrote, “Thank God for people like Elder Adeleke and our own King David.”

Another user, applauding the post’s content, commented, “Correct.”

The claim can also be found on Facebook, YouTube and TikTok.

The economic implication and public interest prompted DUBAWA to verify this assertion.

Verification

We conducted a keyword search to find credible news reports on the completion of a $2 billion power plant but found none. Our search led to a news article from Oct. 16, 2024, in which Adeleke announced that he was constructing what would become the largest power plant in Nigeria, with an expected completion date of January 2025.

He stated: “I’m building the biggest power plant in Nigeria, which will be completed in January 2025. It is a 1,250-megawatt power plant.”

We did not see any news reports suggesting the project had been completed as claimed.

We also reviewed the Pacific Holdings website, the company owned by Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, but found no reports confirming the completion of the power plant.

We emailed, called, and texted Pacific Holdings for a statement but have not received a response.

Conclusion

Although there are news reports on the proposed power plant scheduled for completion in January 2025, there are no reports about its completion.
