The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) has launched a Legal Defense Fund for fact-checkers facing harassment and litigation issues due to their fact-checking work.
The fund facilitated by Meta’s renewed support and IFCN’s partnership with Google News Initiative is available for more than 120 verified signatories of IFCN. Successful applicants will access 40,000 dollars for litigation costs and other fact-checking disputes, information from IFCN reveals.
Enock Nyariki, the Community and Impact manager of The International Fact-Checking Network noted that an 11-member selection committee that will be charged with the responsibility of selecting suitable applicants are fact-checkers representatives from around the globe.
The funding opportunity is exclusively open to only verified signatories of IFCN.
IFCN has also provided additional resources in multiple languages to help fact-checkers address issues of harassment on their new fact-checkers’ resource page.
The IFCN Crisis Communications Management Playbook, best practices guidebook, and Journalist Safety Guide are also available to signatories.
