Verdict: False! The image claiming to show Peter Obi and the late General Sani Abacha at the Presidential Villa is AI-generated.
Analysis confirms it is not authentic, and historical evidence shows that the two men did not operate within the same political timeline.

Rumours of a link between Peter Obi and the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, resurfaced in early July 2025 following comments made by social critic, Reno Omokri.
During an interview via video call with popular broadcaster Ifedayo Olarinde, also known as Daddy Freeze, Reno alleged that Abacha “personally selected Peter Obi to head a task force to decongest the ports,” implying a close working relationship between the two.
He added, “Peter Obi worked for Abacha, and he was Abacha’s boy.”
Reno uploaded the interview on his verified Facebook page on July 2, 2025.
On July 10, 2025, a user on X, Sarki (@waspapping_), whose account is verified, shared an image with the caption:
“A rare throwback of Peter Obi and the late General Sani Abacha enjoying coffee together at the Presidential Villa.”
The image shows two men, appearing to be Peter Obi and Sani Abacha, seated side by side at a table, seemingly relaxed at the Presidential Villa.
As of July 20, 2025, the post had garnered 134,600 views, 596 comments, 230 shares, 1,500 likes, and 338 saves.
The post, however, quickly raised suspicion online, with several users pointing out noticeable inconsistencies in the facial features, attire, and background setting.
One user, 0xAmeen.Shib (@ameeen4live) questioned the image’s legitimacy, asking, “What is the authenticity of this image, @grok?”
Another user, EddyJoe (@JosephOnyilo), appeared to take the image at face value, writing: “Peter Obi must have been a prized and good and upright man to earn Abacha’s trust to drink tea with him. Congratulations to him.”
Although some social media users were quick to dismiss the image as fake, many others accepted it as genuine and began using it to push a misleading narrative about Peter Obi’s relationship with the late General Sani Abacha.
The picture has been circulated not as a joke, but as supposed proof that both men once met at the Presidential Villa.
Users on X shared the image, accompanied by claims about its political significance.
A user, Fendi (iamEkene_), wrote, “I think this picture might even make him more sellable in the North.”
In another post, Mayowa-David (MayorDavid_9) said, “This was when Peter Obi drank with Abacha, a very dangerous man.”
These reactions indicate that the image is being taken seriously and is already influencing how some people perceive Peter Obi’s political history. This growing narrative prompted us to fact-check the Image and claim.
Verification
DUBAWA analysed the image using Illuminarty, an AI image detection tool.
The results revealed an AI with a probability score of 91.9 per cent. This strongly indicates that the photo is not authentic and was digitally fabricated.
Further scrutiny of the image reveals several inconsistencies that reinforce this conclusion.
General Sani Abacha’s distinctive tribal mark is absent, a detail consistently visible in genuine photographs of the late military ruler.
Additionally, the logo on the beret on Abacha’s head does not feature the Nigerian Coat of Arms, a standard part of military attire at his rank.
Checks into the historical context also undermine the claim. General Abacha ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in June 1998, while Peter Obi only emerged on the political scene in the early 2000s.
He was first elected as governor of Anambra State in 2006, several years after Abacha’s death.
Before entering politics, Peter Obi was active in business and banking, with no public record of political involvement during the Abacha era.
Recently, Obi was accused of having ties to the late military ruler. Still, he clarified that his only meeting with Sani Abacha was strictly business-related, and not in any political or social capacity.
Conclusion
The viral image claiming to show Peter Obi and late Sani Abacha enjoying coffee at the Presidential Villa is false. The image is AI-generated.
