Claim: A panellist on Spoon Talk claimed Nigeria’s population is about 1 billion people.
Verdict: False. The World Population and others put the stats at 242 million people.
Full Text
A Nigerian prelate, Babatunde Ayodele, of the Inri Evangelical Spiritual Church, recently announced a prophecy about Liberia.
In it, Primate Ayodele said, hardship is awaiting Liberia because the government is not ready to change.
According to him, Liberia’s economy is confused because the president is.
His prophecy drew criticism from many Liberians, who called on the prophet to focus on the affairs of his country, Nigeria.
One of those who called out Ayodele is a panellist of a nighttime show, the Spoon Talk, who said Liberia has a smaller economy than Nigeria, because the country has a smaller population than that of Nigeria.
According to Dr Rudolph Bropleh, the population of Nigeria is about 1 billion.
Bropleh is heard at 1:52:01 to 1:52:08 of the show, which got about 58.1k views, 3.7k comments, 784 reactions, and 131 shares as of this report.
To promote truth in the information ecosystem, DUBAWA verified the claim made.
Verification
Since 2006, Nigeria has not had its national population count. However, different organisations like the UN and WHO have estimated the nation’s population way less than what Dr Rudolph Bropleh claimed.
The United Nations Population Fund estimates 237 million people in 2025.
As of January 1, 2026, the World Population Review placed the population of Nigeria at 242 million, contrary to Dr Bropleh’s 1 billion claim.
Also, the US Census Bureau’s July 1, 2026, demographic data for Nigeria sets the number at 250 million.
Conclusion
Rudolph Bropleh’s claim that Nigeria’s population is about 1 billion is false.
