As concerns over armed banditry persist across Katsina State, residents in Funtua Local Government Area have remained vigilant following armed incursions around peripheral farming communities and town outskirts.
The security situation raised heightened apprehension on Sept. 4, 2026, when armed assailants entered commercial quarters of Funtua town.
Capitalising on the tension, a Facebook page, Spy Nigeria, shared a post claiming, “Over 100 Bandit Motorcycles Seen as Bandits Currently Attack Funtua LGA in Katsina State”
The post (archived here) attracted several reactions from Facebook users.
Ahmed Lawal, Faruku Umar, alongside Shafiu Ahmad Ciroma, offered prayers for the people of the area.
One commenter, Ismaila Ayoola, asked: “The bandits are from which ethnic group?”
Several users expressed scepticism regarding the number of motorcycles.
One Isah Halidu said, “They were chased out by police men and community watch. So I doubt the number of vehicles they came on.”
As of Sept. 8, 2026, the claim attracted 112 reactions, 28 comments and 25 shares.
Exaggerated figures during active security incidents can incite panic and distort operational realities. Therefore, DUBAWA conducted a field verification to establish the facts.
Verification
DUBAWA carried out on-the-ground verification in Funtua and interviewed eyewitnesses present at the scene.
Muhuyiddeen Mansur, a local trader who witnessed the incident, said the assailants arrived in one Volkswagen Golf, not a motorcycle convoy.
He said one of the men walked over to a nearby stall to buy footwear, but his suspicious demeanour prompted residents to alert a nearby mobile police patrol. “After they arrested him, six of the armed bandits instantly opened fire on the MOPOL vehicle in an effort to rescue him,” Mansur added.
Salisu Maikankan, a spokesperson for the Katsina Community Watch Corps (KSCWC), corroborated this account.
Maikankan, who participated in the operation, confirmed that only seven bandits were involved, noting that officers arrested one suspect on the spot and apprehended another around the Mahuta area. The other assailants escaped.
DUBAWA also contacted the divisional police command in Funtua. An Inspector at the division, Adamu Sambo, refuted the social media post.
“The armed bandits were seven in number, not the rumour I have seen circulating on social media that the armed bandits were over 100 on motorbikes.”
Saidu urged the public to refrain from circulating unsubstantiated claims that can incite fear and chaos during ongoing security operations.
Conclusion
The claim that more than 100 armed bandits on motorcycles attacked Funtua Local Government Area of Katsina State is misleading. While a gun battle erupted after security operatives intercepted and arrested armed suspects in the town, verified field evidence confirms that only seven armed bandits travelling in a car were involved.
