Claim: An X user shared a video claiming that it shows Nigerians attacking South Africans.
Verdict: False. We found that the video is from DR Congo, not Nigeria.
Full Text
In April 2026, fresh xenophobic violence erupted in South Africa that claimed the lives of two Nigerians. This caused anxiety within the diaspora community and prompted the Nigerian government to engage diplomatically.
Following this incident, Nigeria announced its decision to repatriate its citizens willing to leave South Africa after the attacks.
Against this backdrop, an X user, @Rural_Mayor, claimed (archived here) that Nigerians have begun to attack South Africans and have injured a few.
“Nigerians have started attacking South Africans in Nigeria… So far, 3 South Africans are badly injured from the attack now receiving medical treatment in a Nigerian private hospital…” the X user wrote.
The video has also been used to portray Fulani attacks in a community in Ibadan, Oyo State, as seen on Facebook (here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here).
As of Monday, May 25, 2026, the post has attracted 93 views.
Due to the post’s sensitivity, DUBAWA decided to verify the claim.
Verification
DUBAWA submitted keyframes from the video to Google Lens, which linked us to a similar clip shared by another X user, @nwaezivictor.
In the post, the X user stated that the video originated from Byakato, in the Mombasa territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He further explained that the chaotic scene portrayed the invasion of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) on May 7, 2026, which led to casualties and human displacement.
DUBAWA conducted a keyword search related to the incident, which led us to an Instagram post. The post, which was shared on May 8, 2026, highlighted how pandemonium occurred in Byakato, Mambasa, due to the incursion of ADF rebels.
We also found a news report by a Chinese news agency, Xinhua, that 12 civilians were killed due to the incursion of ADF rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Chinese Global Television Network (CGTN) also reported a similar incident.
We also checked if any reputable news outlets reported the alleged attack of Nigerians on South Africans, but we found no related information about that.
Conclusion
The claim is false. The post concerns an incident in DR Congo, not Nigeria.
