A veteran Nigerian entertainer, Charles Oputa (Charly Boy), deleted a video praising the Kenyan protesters for going rogue and destroying public properties after DUBAWA’s report verified the claim as misleading.

Social media has been filled with videos showing Kenyans expressing their opposition to the tax hike bill introduced by the William Ruto-led administration. This move has had many effects, such as the president scrapping his cabinet and rejecting the controversial financial bill.

One of the videos showed Kenyans destroying an aeroplane, which a Nigerian claimed was a $1.5 million private jet for Mr Ruto. Charly Boy shared the Instagram video, generating massive reactions and comments.

DUBAWA’s fact check revealed that the aircraft at Uhuru Park was a revamped aeroplane meant to be converted to a restaurant, not the presidential jet reported on the Africa Report, as indicated in the claim.

A few days after publishing the report, we checked Mr Charly Boy’s Instagram page, where he had posted the video, and discovered that he had deleted it.

He is one of few prominent Nigerians who react appropriately to fact-checks that reveal his contents as misleading. In 2022, he shared an altered video showing Hollywood movie stars holding placards depicting support for the Labour Party’s presidential candidate at the 2023 general election, Peter Obi. He deleted it after DUBAWA’s fact check verified it as misleading.
