Months after DUBAWA fact-checked a video showing a repentant Boko Haram member caught attempting to supply ammunition to terrorists, Facebook and X users have deleted the posts.
In August 2025, a video circulated on social media claiming to be a repentant Boko Haram member arrested while trying to transport guns and ammunition to terrorists.
This claim started spreading months after over 390 Boko Haram members graduated from the government’s de-radicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration programme in Gombe State, which the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, described as the military’s initiative to curb insecurity in the country.
The post, which was shared on X and Facebook, has an overlaid graphic that reads, “A repentant Boko Haram member who joined the Nigerian army was allegedly caught with Ammunition.”
However, DUBAWA’s findings reveal that the video has been online since 2022, not a recent development as portrayed.
Also, a publication by Punch in 2022 reported the incident to be a former military personnel, Iorliam Emmanuel, apprehended by his colleagues for stealing and selling ammunition to criminal gangs and terrorist groups.
Another report by CEOAfrica also confirmed the apprehended individual to be a former military man and not a repentant terrorist, as claimed on the now-deleted X and Facebook posts.
Meanwhile, the Cable published a similar story, adding that the individual, who hails from Benue State, was handed over to the Military intelligence for further investigation.
Months after the DUBAWA investigation, we noticed that the post published on August 22, 2025, has been deleted and can no longer be traced on X and Facebook.
This is part of DUBAWA’s success story in combating misinformation and disinformation across various social media platforms.
