Baba Aisha Investigation: We need feedback from the public to enhance clampdown on fake drugs — NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has called for collaboration from the public to guarantee the safety of the products they consume.

Francis Ononiwu, the NAFDAC’s director of investigation and enforcement, directorate Lagos State, said this in a Twitter Space organised by Premium Times and DUBAWA.

The Twitter space followed an investigation by Kemi Busari, which scientifically probed Baba Aisha’s medicine.

Addressing the outcome of the investigation, Mr Francis said consumers should look out for the label of products before using them.

According to him, the label contains basic information on regulated products. He also advised that consumers should be conscious of the accuracy of English used in the label.

The organisation said situations where sentences are not grammatical should be considered a red flag.

Mr Francis said there is some basic information to look out for when getting drugs, such as the NAFDAC Registration number, the name of the product, the Batch number and the Production date.

He said consumers should also look out for the manufacturing date and stated expiry date.

He stated that NAFDAC has made it easy for the public to report drugs found with any error in any report.

“All you need to do is type NAFDAC on Google, scroll and click on the Reforms Unit, report any infraction, and what you report shall be investigated,” he said.

Mr Francis also said the phone numbers of the different directorates are included on the NAFDAC website.

He revealed that NAFDAC had been trailing Baba Aisha Drugs for a long time.

Mr Francis clarified the products were registered initially. The owner had gotten marketing authorisation, and when he needed to renew the licence, the company failed to adhere to the provisions of the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Agency (CAPPA).
