Ebenezer Obey, a veteran Nigerian musician, singer, and band leader, is considered one of Nigeria’s most influential and successful musicians. He is often referred to as the “Chief Commander.” The renowned Juju music icon and Evangelist recently turned 83 on April 3, 2025.
Tunde Sobowale, a Facebook user, asserted that the Nigerian juju musician, Ebenezer Obey, is dead.
“Rest in perfect peace in the Lord, sir Ebenezer obey, commander is dead,” Tunde wrote.
Because of his fame and personality, news of the death gained traction and was shared on blogs and social media. The claim was shared on Facebook here, here, here, and here, and on X.
Given the virality of the claim, the personality involved, and the emotional strain it could cause fans, DUBAWA decided to verify its authenticity.
Verification
DUBAWA conducted a keyword search to find what credible news outlets have reported about the music legend, but we found nothing. However, we found a video released by Ebenezer Obey on his Instagram page with the caption “I AM ALIVE!!!!!” refuting the claim about his death.
In high spirits, Obey sings in Yoruba, English and pidgin that he is not dead. “It is fake news that started a few hours ago claiming that I, Evangelist Obey, have passed on to glory. It is a lie. I am alive,” he declared in the post.
The legend‘s aide, Tope Olukole, also confirmed this to TVC News.
“Let’s set the record straight: Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi is alive and thriving! He recently celebrated a joyous occasion— the 50th birthday of his second child’s spouse. Rumours of his passing are baseless and entirely unfounded. We’re glad to see him active and well,” his aide told TVC News.
Punchng, Tribune Online and The Nation Newspapers also corroborated the story, proving the news is false.
