Full Text

It is less than 24 hours until the anticipated national protest, during which Nigerians will express their displeasure with the increasing hardship they have faced since President Bola Tinubu’s administration was inaugurated.

As this event approaches, DUBAWA has seen several clips from alleged protests against the planned protest on various social media platforms. Some say that protests have already started in some states. This particular narrative is circulating with a protest video shared on Facebook and X, as seen here, here, and here.

In the video, young people were seen carrying placards and banners with inscriptions like “End Nigerian Hardship,” “Nigerians deserve better,” and “Tinubu, it’s not by force.”

Using multimedia content to drive narratives is not uncommon, especially in moments like this. Most of the time, DUBAWA ends up debunking such narratives as false. It is for that reason that we are conducting this verification.

Verification

We broke the video into keyframes using Invid and reverse-searched some screenshots. The results showed that the clip has been on YouTube since 19 Feb. 2024, when the youths led a peaceful demonstration in Ibadan (Oyo State) over the state of Nigeria’s economy. This was also reported by media platforms like Channels TV, Leadership, Punch, and New Telegraph newspapers.

Conclusion

Although DUAWA could not confirm whether protests have started in some states, the video used to promote the claim is outdated and misleading.
