As different narratives and trends circulate online, misinformation and disinformation keep spreading, shaping public conversations, especially on Facebook.
Below are some of the major claims DUBAWA verified this week.
- NSCDC arrest Fulani men for banditry in Sokoto State
A Facebook page, Hausaland Magazine, shared images claiming that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) paraded seven Fulani youth suspected of cattle rustling and banditry in Sokoto.
DUBAWA investigated the image and found that it was recycled, as the arrest occurred in 2021, not recently as alleged.
We also saw an official press statement from the security outfit about the incident.
- 2027: NDC campaign rally taking over Jos, Calabar
A Facebook user, Political Warri Boi, posted a video claiming Peter Obi’s supporters were taking over campaign activities in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections. Obi is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
DUBAWA discovered that no credible Nigerian news outlet recently reported the alleged incident. We also ran the clip through Google Reverse Image Search, which indicated it was filmed in 2022.

- Video of Yoruba people protesting against Tinubu
A Facebook user, Justice Mayor Backup, shared a video of protesters and claimed that Yoruba people are tired of President Bola Tinubu’s government and are now voicing their dissatisfaction.
DUBAWA checked trusted news sources on the incident but found none. Next, we conducted a digital analysis of keyframes from the video and found that the clip has been online since 2024.

- Is it true that over 40 people were killed in Niger State?
For a while now, Niger State has witnessed increased communal clashes between farming and pastoralist communities over land disputes, natural resources, and grievances, often triggering deadly violence.
Against this backdrop, a Facebook page shared a video claiming that 48 people were killed and burned during a clash in Rafi LGA, Niger State.
DUBAWA verified the claim and found reports showing that the incident occurred earlier in July 2026.

- Did Sultan of Sokoto defend Nigerian senator allegedly linked to terrorism?
There is a recent controversy involving Shehu Buba Umar, a lawmaker representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, regarding sponsorship of banditry in Nigeria, and security forces have been investigating the allegations.
Amid this, a Facebook user alleged that the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar, rejected an investigation into the issue.
DUBAWA fact-checked the claim and found no credible evidence that the Sultan of Sokoto made or endorsed the statement attributed to him.
