A Facebook user named Biggy Smalls posted an image of a clean, modern car wash showing several luxury cars in the background, with a large Sierra Leonean flag. The caption reads: “Local car wash in Sierra Leone.” The post garnered over 160 reactions and was shared by Others, leading many people to believe this was a real car wash in the country.
The picture initially appeared suspicious, with signs of AI-generated content and the potential to mislead. DUBAWA, therefore, decided to investigate the authenticity of the document further.
Verification
When DUBAWA looked closely at the photo, the fact-checker noticed several signs that showed the image was not real and was made using Artificial Intelligence (AI):
The flag looks too perfect:
The Sierra Leone flag in the image appears overly smooth and unnaturally wavy. The image was digitally enhanced to give the impression that it is from Sierra Leone.
The cars have no transparent brand logos or plates:
Most cars in the picture, especially the orange car in the front, do not have realistic brand logos. The license plates are also unclear, resembling random letters and numbers, a common characteristic of AI-generated images.
The building design is unfamiliar in Sierra Leone:
The structure labelled “CAR WASH” has a very advanced architectural style that is not commonly found in any part of Sierra Leone. The design is more likely found in developed Western countries or created using image-generation tools.
Reverse Image Search:
A reverse image search revealed no such location in Sierra Leone. It’s an AI-generated image of a car wash. DUBAWA used an Illuminarty AI tool, which showed a 93.5% AI-generated image.
