Marc-Vivien Foé, born May 1, 1975, was a Cameroonian professional footballer who played defensive midfielder for club and country. Having initially played for Canon Yaoundé, Mr Foé went on to play professionally in Ligue 1 and the Premier League with Lens, West Ham United, Lyon, and Manchester City.

Ds Football Data, a group dedicated to educating people about football, posted that Mr Foe died while playing on the field. 

In the post, they said Mr Foe was playing for the “Indomitable Lions” and was on the verge of victory when the midfielder collapsed on the pitch and died instantly. 

This post has gone viral and has had 13,000 likes, 1700 comments, and 264 shares since it was posted on August 8, 2023. 

The virality of this post and the sensitive nature of this post made us at DUBAWA investigate the claim. 

Verification

We did an advanced Google search on the news to validate its authenticity and saw that different news outlets had posted it on their pages. We discovered that June 27, 2023, made it 20 years since the football legend passed away, and different people and football clubs shared the news. 

Manchester City, where the midfielder stayed for three years and adapted seamlessly to English football’s fast-paced and physical nature, posted his picture on the 20th anniversary of his death with the caption “never forgotten”. 

Mr Foe also played for West Ham United in the English Premier League, where he spent just one season before returning to France to play for Lyon. They also posted a tribute to him with the caption,

“Today marks 20 years since Marc-Vivien Foe tragically passed away. Rest in peace.” 

The legend’s international career flourished, culminating in his participation in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup in France. It was during this tournament that tragedy struck. In a semi-final match against Colombia, Foe collapsed on the pitch, succumbing to heart-related conditions. 

Mr Foe tragic passing promoted increased awareness and research into cardiac health in professional footballers. 

Conclusion
