Claim: Different Facebook users claimed that a Durex survey mentioned Nigeria as the country with the most unfaithful women in the world.

Verdict: MISLEADING. The data was a sensationalised presentation of a 2012 survey from Durex analysing the value of condom use as a global public health measure.

Different social media users claimed that Nigeria leads among countries with the most unfaithful women globally. A Facebook user, Untamed, posted a list of countries with the most cheating women, and Nigeria ranked highest with 62%. Other countries on the list were Thailand (59%), Italy (50%), the United Kingdom (42%), Russia (33%), Spain (30%), and France (16%).
The Facebook user also said Nigeria ranks second in paternity fraud rate at 30%, and his data was based on a Durex survey of 29,000 people from 36 countries.
As of Oct. 18, 2024, it had gained 448 reactions, 140 comments, and 19 reshares since it was posted on Oct. 5, 2024. The claim was also found here and here.
The claim’s negative impact on Nigerian women’s reputation prompted DUBAWA to verify it.
Verification
We used DUBAWA Chatbot, an information-verification AI-driven tool, to fact-check the paternity fraud claim. It disclosed that the claim is false as there is no official data or national survey to support the claim, relying on references from reliable media platforms here, here and here.
We also used keyword searches to verify the Durex survey claim. We found that different media organisations reported that the condom manufacturing company published such a survey, like here, here, and here. However, none of the platforms provided any personal analysis to validate their verdict, further fuelling the claim’s virality.
DUBAWA also discovered that the only survey associated with Durex is the Global Sex Survey, a periodical comprehensive study on sexual health and well-being conducted on 29,000 respondents from 36 countries every five years. This contradicts the viral infidelity claim attributed to Durex.
The claim has been recurring since 2012, which prompted DUBAWA to search for the survey’s 2012 edition, titled “First sex: using a condom and its impact on future sexual behaviour.” We discovered that Nigeria and South Africa are the only African countries on the survey list. Also, Nigeria had a cumulative score of 62.8 from 500 respondents. Nowhere was it mentioned in the survey that Nigeria had the most unfaithful or the highest cheating women globally.
Durex Nigeria disclosed that they have shared the claim with the appropriate team after we contacted them on Oct. 14, 2024, through their verified Instagram page. As of Oct. 18, 2024, they’re yet to respond.
Conclusion
The Durex survey did not implicate Nigeria as the country with the most unfaithful women globally. Therefore, it is misleading.
