Months after DUBAWA’s report debunking a video of rotten naira notes allegedly discovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) have taken down the posts.
In February 2025, a video circulating on social media claimed that the EFCC discovered stacks of spoiled naira notes in a container in Abuja.
The claim had circulated shortly after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced the increment in ATM charges for both “on-site” and “off-site” withdrawals.
Reflecting on the development, a social media user, @Sebastineogb, posted a video claiming the EFCC had recently discovered bags of rotten Naira notes somewhere in Abuja.
His caption read, “Breaking News: EFCC discovered money hidden in a container in Wadata, Abuja. This is why our politicians will never make heaven, just look at our money. The election of bad leaders has consequences.”
However, DUBAWA’s findings showed that the user had reshared a video from 2022 and depicted it as a recent one.
Findings also established that the video was used in a misleading context. A Punch report confirmed that the sack contained condemned notes from the CBN, not legal tender as social media users claimed.
Also, the Benue police confirmed that they had invited the shop’s owner, Isah Suleiman, for questioning. Isah reportedly tendered a waste management licence issued to him by the CBN. The police explained that the waste papers from the CBN were usually processed into mosquito repellents.
DUBAWA discovered that the post, published on Feb. 17, 2025, was deleted in September 2025, and the user’s X account was suspended.

Also, the Facebook accounts that shared the posts at the time have deleted the videos from their pages, as the links to the videos posted in February are now broken.
The development reflects the success of DUBAWA’s intense fight against misinformation.
