Did CDC administration budget exceed $600 million mark?

Full Text

Sylvester Wonplue, a youth leader of the Unity Party in Montserrado County, recently criticised the previous CDC-led administration for allegedly failing to increase the national budget over the past six years.

“They could not increase the National Budget from 600 million dollars, where they met the budget for 6 years,” Wonplue claimed while reacting to the CDC’s support for the July 17 protest led by the group ‘STAND,’ headed by former CDC chairperson Mulbah Morlu.

Wonplue described the protest as hypocritical. According to the CDC, the protest was against corruption and demanded accountability from the current Boakai administration.

However, his claim regarding the CDC era budget has the potential to mislead, so DUBAWA decided to verify it.

Verification

An analysis of official budget records from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning shows that the CDC administration increased its national budget above $600 million during its tenure.

In Fiscal Year 2022, the CDC government passed a budget of USD 800 million.

In Fiscal Year 2023, the budget was $782 million.

These figures contradict Wonplue’s statement. Furthermore, when contacted for clarification or evidence, Wonplue declined to respond to our researcher’s queries.

Conclusion

The Unity Party’s Sylvester Wonplue’s claim that the CDC failed to increase the national budget beyond $600 million over six years is false.
