The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests have gained popularity across Nigeria as people took to the streets to demonstrate against unfair government policies that have made living standards unbearable.

A TikTok user, @base_on_situation_report, posted a video alleging Nigerian soldiers in a convoy receiving money through the windows.

The caption in the video clip reads, “Nigeria soldiers are begging for money from protesters in Delta State.”

As of Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, the post had amassed about 4,000 likes, 286 comments, and 1,200 reposts.

Some users affirmed the post’s authenticity in the comment section and criticised Nigerian soldiers as irresponsible. However, other users argued the video did not take place in Nigeria.

Due to the engagement the post has amassed and the different opinions made by TikTokers, DUBAWA  decided to investigate it.

Verification

We conducted a Google Reverse Image Search on some screenshots of the video clip and came across a similar video. DUBAWA discovered that the individual giving out the money is Ghanaian dancehall and reggae artiste Livingstone Satekla, popularly known as Stonebwoy.

DUBAWA did a keyword search on Stonebwoy giving out money to soldiers, and we came across a report by Ghana-based news outlet GhanaWeb about the reggae artiste distributing GHC100 notes to the Ghana Armed Forces and Ghana Police Service in a convoy. This was reported on Jul. 31, 2024.

In another report by the same media outlet on Aug. 2, 2024, veteran journalist and host of the entertainment review show on Peace FM, Kwasi Aboagye, cautioned the artiste to desist from sharing money with his fans on the street. He stated that such an act could cause a road accident.

We checked for credible media reports on related incidents during the protests in Nigeria but found none that highlighted the claim.

Conclusion

Findings show that the video of the armed forces collecting money is unconnected to Nigeria, as claimed. Thus, it is misleading.
